TOUR ITINERARY DETAILS:

 

Day 1: Arrival in UB

We will meet at either the train station or the airport and first head for your hotel. Once you’re settled in, we’ll give you a basic orientation in UB and talk through the plans for the trip. Depending on the time of day and your energy level, we can go for a walking tour of downtown UB or head for one of the local coffee shops. We like to go out for dinner together on your first night in UB, unless you are too tired of course. In any case, we’ll be leaving early tomorrow so everybody will be turning in rather soon.

 

Day 2: Khustai & Sand Strings

We leave UB and head west, our first destination is Khustai National Park. Here, among rolling hills,the Przewalski Horses have been re-introduced to the wild as one of only a handful of truly wild breeds of horses all over the world. After lunch, we will head to the Sand Strings, a rare sight of sand hills with rivers and lake. The sand string continues over 150 km and is sodden under its surface, so shrubberies such as willow, elm and dogwood, grow in the area.

We stay overnight at a gher camp. 

 

Day 3: Karakorum City

Today, we will explore Karakorum city ruin, it was the ancient capital of Great Mongolian Empire built during Ugudei Khan's rein in 1220s. In the center of town you will find Erdene Zuu monastery. The four stone turtles that originally marked the boundaries of ancient Karakorum still exist nowadays. After visiting the actual site, we explore the modern Karakorum museum which features many artefacts from the times of the Mongolian empire, a model reconstruction of Karakorum city and extensive information on Mongolian history.

 

Day 4: Return to UB - Traditional Mongolian Folk Music Performance

We leave our camp after breakfast and head back towards UB. The road has improved considerably over the past few years so we will arrive in the early afternoon. After checking back into our hotels we will meet up again to join a performance of traditional Mongolian song and dance. After getting an idea of what the country looks and sounds like, this caps off a short but rewarding excursion into Mongolia.

Day 5: Departure day - Airport / Train Station Drop off
