Western Mongolia

The Mongolia of Mongolia

Far away, hard to reach and sparsely populated, Western Mongolia truly is the Mongolia of Mongolia. You'll find a different type of people here, as the Kazakh minority lives mostly in this area. High mountains, cold nights, early snow are the natural characteristics. Hiking or riding into the mountains on multi-day expeditions, as well as discovering beautiful lakes and the largest sand dune of Mongolia are all activities in this area. You may fly in from UB, or take the long way there and back again by car, or fly in and drive out. The massive Altai mountains attract mountaineers from all over the world, and the natural beauty stuns even experienced local travellers every time they come here.

Activities

Activities

Camel Riding

Available in many places, but most fun on sand. If you have never been between the comfy, furry humps of a camel, it should be on your bucket list.

Horse Riding

Mongolian horses are smaller than their western relatives, but easier to ride, stronger and have more stamina. Ride for an hour along the tour or insert a multi-day horse ride in your itinerary.

Hiking

There's always hiking, but not like in the West. You can spend days hiking among snow-capped peaks and camping in the hills.

Visiting Nomads

Nomads still move 4 times per year, a whole family in a single Ger. Modern technology helps, but it's basically stil lthe same lifestyle as over the past centuries.
