Northern Mongolia

The Opposite of the South

Green colour, rivers, lakes, hills, mountains and trees... the north of Mongolia is the literal opposite of the south, not only geographically. Even in summer, the nights get quite chilly here, and winter comes sooner up here.

Home to the largest lake of the country, lake Khuvsgul, as well as to extinct volcanoes and large herds of yak, the North has its own fascination for travellers.

Roads are softer up north, though you are more likely to get stuck in mud up here than in the Gobi.

Distances are also quite long, so while it's possible to see a lot within a week or so, consider spending extra nights every now and then to truly enjoy what Mongolia has to offer.

Amarbayasgalant Monastery

Deep inside the Selenge valley we find the Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the few centres of resurgent monastic life in the country. The valley itself is beautiful and invites for a hike, just as the surrounding mountains do.

Uraan Togoo - Extinct Volcano

The extinct Uraan Togoo volcano stands tall above the surrounding area. A almost perfectly shaped cone, it reminds people of Mount Fuji in Japan. After a hike to the top, enjoy the breathtaking view and, most likely, a stiff wind at the top.

Khuvsgul Lake

Thanks to the good roads the drive to Khuvsgul lake has become much more comfortable. This "Blue Pearl of Mongolia" is famous for its clear waters, beautiful and lively ecosystem and invites travellers to stay for more than a day.

White Lake Terkh & Khorgo extinct volanco

The extinct volcano Khorgo lies next to the large mountain lake Terkh. Spend the day horseriding around the lake, scaling the mountain and exploring the rocks and caves around the area.

Tsenkher Hot Spring

A healing spring popular since the soviet times, Tsenkher spring water is high in natural sulfur and the water fills the pools of the camps around the spring. The crowded feeling quickly gives way after a long hike through the pristine valley, and the pools of the camps invite for an hour of soaking and relaxing.

Far in the north, the Tsaatan tribe of Mongolians still lives off their reindeer herds. Let us know if you'd live to visit them.

Horse Riding

Mongolian horses are smaller than their western relatives, but easier to ride, stronger and have more stamina. Ride for an hour along the tour or insert a multi-day horse ride in your itinerary.

Hiking

Therer's always a little hiking. Depending on your fitness, you can do more or less of it along the way. However, let us know if you want to spend a full day or two on foot.

Visiting Nomads

Nomads still move 4 times per year, a whole family in a single Ger. Modern technology helps, but it's basically stil lthe same lifestyle as over the past centuries.
