The Gobi
A surprisingly lively desert

The Gobi is the most well-known area of Mongolia, even among people that don't know that Mongolia is a sovereign nation.
It is not a sandy desert for the most part, but more like rocky steppe. Roads here are harder, and the vegetation is too.
You will see most of Mongolia's animals here, but nowhere else will you see more two-humped camels than here.

Steppe turns to hills - riverbeds to rivers - cows turn to yak - the north of Mongolia is the opposite of the Gobi in every respect. Green, cold at night even in summer, hills and snow-capped mountains and home to the largest lake of the country.
